Elon Musk Now Says Twitter Users Will Have to Pay Monthly Subscription Fees

Elon Musk, on Monday, while discussing his plans for Twitter now X with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stated that Twitter was moving towards a small monthly payment. He noted that the move was geared towards combating vast armies of bots on the platform. Musk did not, however, disclose how much each Twitter user will be required to pay monthly. During the livestream, Musk noted that Twitter has about 550 million users who generate between 100 million and 200 million tweets daily.

The discussions with the Israeli Prime Minister were meant to focus on the theoretical risks of AI technology and how AI can be regulated. During the discussion, Musk disputed claims that Twitter was tolerating hate speech and anti-Semitism. He was responding to criticism that has been ongoing from civil rights groups because of his amplification of bigotry and anti-Semitic accounts.

Over the last few weeks, Musk has threatened to sue the Anti-Defamation League, stating that they had tried to “kill” Twitter. He blamed ADL for Twitter’s drop in revenue. However, he has yet to file any known lawsuit against ADL.

Twitter has had a massive change since Musk took over the Platform. Some of the changes included the elimination of the verification badge. Only users who pay a fee can get the badge next to their name. In addition, the verified users have their posts prioritized in other users’ feeds. People who don’t pay the verification fee are relegated to the lower levels, and therefore, their posts see lower engagement on the platform. Musk noted that turning users into subscribers would make it unaffordable to deploy bits on the platform.

Twitter is already working on getting licenses to become a money transmitter in the USA. As per many public records, X has already obtained permission to transmit money in 8 states.
